Hey all,
Just wondering if anyone has any write ups/documentation on anything related
with an EXR based pipeline which involves a digital intermediate setup. Any
advice on integrating EXR into an already established pipeline would also be
most appreciated.

Thanks guys

Hi Tim,

On the OpenEXR web site you can find a paper that describes how
OpenEXR can be integrated into a visual effects pipeline:
http://www.openexr.com/OpenEXRColorManagement.pdf
As far as I know, several companies that use OpenEXR for visual
effects do something that is conceptually very similar to what
the paper describes. (The paper recommends that color management
be implemented using an interpreter for a Color Transformation
Language, or CTL. A working interpreter for CTL exists, but we
have not yet released it as open source.)

Over the last year or so, a number of people have been discussing
ways to extend or modify the color management method described
in the paper to make it more useful for a digital intermediate
pipeline. The main problem is that for visual effects production
you want the data in your image files to represent colors in the
depicted scene, but in a DI pipeline the data in the file should
represent what you will see on the screen. How to set up a
pipeline that makes transitioning between those two image states
easy and painless for users has been the source of a lot of
rather lengthy debates.
